STUDYPATH* December 15-18, 2009

The screening of Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451 will be shown Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in class. Vocabulary for the first part of the book will be reviewed briefly; definitions, parts of speech, syllabication, and diacritical markings will be due on Tuesday; test is scheduled for Wednesday in class, with spelling a critical component. Any unfinished class discussion on Part Three "Burning Bright" will be completed on Monday.

Students will read The Tragedy of Julius Caesar over the break completing various assignments that will be announced in class, including outlining portions of the prewriting assigned.

Students will complete and organize portfolios before week's end so that assignments are in order for review and scoring.

The Fahrenheit 451 "History of the Firemen" essay is due Monday. Follow directions on the prompt paper that was completed with prewriting annotations. The final test for the novel is scheduled before the end of this week.

"Finding the Right Key" lesson will be reviewed by Learning Team members and returned to students with a score.

Secondary Expository Assessment-Exposition multiple choice test taking skills will be assigned in class this week.

Literary terms from the anthology will be reviewed today in class with the test scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday. Anthologies should be brought to class on Monday.

Fahrenheit 451 essay prompt will be presented to students so they may prewrite the essay; prewrites are due on Wednesday and the essay due date is Monday, December 14. Twenty-five talking points for Part Three "Burning Bright" are due on Friday for our usual class discussion. The discussion of Part Two was not completed by either class on Friday so books are due in class today for completion of the talking points' class discussion.

F451 vocabulary (ten words) will be reviewed in class on Friday with a quiz set: additional vocabulary for F451 will be assigned in class.

Grammar lessons this week include subordinate clauses assignments, with some work being done in class and some assigned as homework. English Workshop is not due this week in class; instead we will use the Holt Grammar Handbook which is a class set.

Cisneros' "Straw Into Gold" and Alexie's "Superman and Me" are both scheduled for in-class work as the Expository Secondary Periodic Assessment continues. Some multiple-choice practice will be completed in class to prepare for the next assessment.

Anthologies are due in class Monday and Tuesday for literary terms assignment; test will be scheduled.

Wednesday is English Workshop day; text should be brought to class for assignment.

The answers to the Clinton speech questions will be transferred to the Reader/Writer notebooks for Period One only; Period Five completed this on Friday.

Work begins on the Expository Secondary Periodic Assessment unit with Cisneros' "Straw Into Gold" from the multicultural textbook.

Vocabulary Workshop answers for Cumulative Review Units One-Six are due Wednesday; these are the assigned pages between the end of Unit Six and the beginning of Unit Seven.

Both classes should bring Fahrenheit 451 novels to class on Monday for wrap up of Part One "The Hearth and the Salamander" discussion. Period One must also bring the anthologies for poetry selections to end the persuasion unit of the Secondary Periodic Assessment. Both classes should bring anthologies to class on Tuesday for the next reading selections.

The answers to the Clinton speech questions will be transferred to the Reader/Writer notebooks.

Check blog next Sunday night for assignments and texts due for the November 30-December 4 instructional period.

Vocabulary Workshop Unit Six test is scheduled for Tuesday, and correct answers for that unit will be read in class on Monday so student papers may be checked. Units One-Six cumulative review pages will be begun in class on Thursday and completed at home; test due date will be announced in class.

The Clinton speech answers will be returned to students with a score and be transferred to the Reader/Writer notebooks, ending the Secondary Periodic Assessment-Persuasion unit. The next Secondary Periodic Assessment unit, Exposition, begins this week.

Grammar assigned from English Workshop will be due Thursday; bring textbook to class on Wednesday for grammar lesson.

The Clinton speech answers due date has been extended to Tuesday. These questions will be reviewed in class on Monday; answers are written on your own paper and should also be written in the Reader/Writer notebooks. E-mail your responses to jcarmicl@lausd.net by 12:00 A.M.

There is no school on Wednesday, Veterans Day.

Thursday and Friday are scheduled for administration of the Secondary Periodic Assessment-Persuasion unit. Because of that testing, no grammar will be assigned this week. However, a reminder that Unit Six Vocabulary Workshop is due on Thursday.

Bring The Catcher in the Rye novels on Monday when the essay is due. The essay should be double-spaced and meet minimum length stated in the prompt. Use twelve-point type size and a standard font. Books will be collected in class on Monday and returned to the textbook room so Fahrenheit 451 may be distributed for the next reading and class discussion assignments.

Anthologies are due in class on Monday and Tuesday as usual when literary terms will be reviewed and the test scheduled for the next set of ten terms.

Vocabulary Workshop
Unit Four test scheduled for today, Monday. Unit Five is due on Thursday of this week, when books are required in class.

Grammar assignment (page 225 in English Workshop) is due Wednesday, when books are due in class. A new grammar lesson and homework wiil be assigned.

Anthologies are due in class Monday and Tuesday for literary terms. Letter to the Editor prewriting for the short story "The Bet" is due Tuesday and the letter due on Friday.

The multiple choice practice for the Secondary Periodic Assessment-Persuasion continues all week in class in preparation for the upcoming test. The Clinton speech will be assigned this week and students should read to answer the depth and complexity questions that were used for the Chavez speech. Reader/Writer notebooks will be used for prewriting the practice persuasive examination to be scheduled next week.

The Catcher in the Rye
final exam will be scheduled this week. The essay is due on November 9.

Vocabulary Workshop Unit Four will be scheduled on Thursday and student should bring textbooks to class; test date will be announced in class.

Multiple choice practice for the persuasion unit of the Secondary Periodic Assessment continues in class. The Chavez speech is due on Tuesday; Monday will be spent on methods to interpret author's purpose and intent using the Multicultural Literature book. The final speech, Clinton's address in Memphis, will be scheduled as well. Students will continue work in the Reader/Writer notebooks.

Grammar assignment is due Monday; English Workshop grammar books are due in class on Wednesday for continuing grammar work.

The Catcher in the Rye talking points for Chapters Twenty-One through Twenty-Six are due on Friday. Complete talking points on each chapter, except for Twenty-Six. The final class discussion is scheduled for Friday. A multiple choice exam and final essay will be scheduled as well.

Anthologies are due in class on Tuesday for the next set of literary terms and a test will be scheduled in class. The letter to the editor assignment from the short story "The Bet" will be assigned on Tuesday and a due date set.

The Sojourner Truth essay prompt has reopened on gomyaccess.com for those students who were not able to complete it. The new deadline is Wednesday, October 28. Handwritten or typed essays of the prompt will receive credit only, not a letter grade for this assignment. All students are encouraged to submit the essay online.

Literary terms 41-50 from Elements of Literature, 4th Course will be reintroduced on Monday and Tuesday when textbooks are required in class with a test scheduled and to be announced. A "Letter to the Editor" writing assignment will accompany the short story "The Bet" and due dates will be announced in class.

Five talking points per chapter for Chapters Sixteen-Twenty of Catcher in the Rye are due on Friday for our usual class discussion. A test on Chapters these chapters will precede the class discussion.

Grammar assignment from English Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, when books are due in class.

Vocabulary Workshop
Unit I-III cumulative review answers are due on Tuesday, and test is scheduled for Thursday in class; students should study the textbook to prepare.

Work on the Chavez speech and Clinton speech will be completed in class this week; multiple choice work for the persuasive secondary periodic assessment will also be completed. The Say-Mean-Matter graphic organizers for the Chavez speech will be assigned and transferred to the Reader/Writer notebooks.

Students who completed the Sojourner Truth essay online will be provided with their essays and scores; those who were unable to log in and complete the speech will be offered a score on an essay format yet to be decided.

This week's study of the Sojourner Truth "Ain't I A Woman" speech will require that students complete an online essay at gomyaccess.com by Friday. This persuasive essay should address the prompt available online. A Cornell Notes quiz is scheduled for this week and students will be given time to study their notes to prepare. Unit III Vocabulary Workshop answers are due on Thursday, and the English Workshop grammar textbook is due in class on Wednesday for a grammar lesson. Elements of Literature, 4th Course books are used on Mondays and Tuesdays and students should be reading the short story "The Bet," and beginning to answer questions posed when Homework One was downloaded earlier in the semester. The next set of literary terms will be assigned as well, with a quiz scheduled either later this week or early next week. Chapters Six-Ten of Catcher in the Rye talking points are due on Friday for our weekly class discussion. Remember to write five talking points per chapter for this week. The "Say-Mean-Matter" graphic organizer will be used in class this week as an additional resource to prepare for the upcoming essay and the Secondary Periodic Assessment-Persuasion unit--Period Five will visit the Vantage Writing Lab on Wednesday to work on the essay but is still responsible for bringing the English Workshop text to class for a grammar lesson. The Clinton and Chavez speeches will be assigned soon and multiple-choice practice for the assessment continues in class. "The Cold Equations" changing the ending assignment has been scored and will be returned to students.

This week's blog debuts the weekly schedule in narrative form rather than in a day-by-day format.


Monday is an unassigned day so classes will resume on Tuesday, when students will take a literary terms test in class. "Ain't I A Woman," Sojourner Truth's speech will be discussed as part of the Secondary Periodic Assessment persuasion unit; multiple-choice practice for the persuasive SPA exam will also continue. "The Cold Equations" creative writing assignment is due today and should be stapled on top of the prewriting and prompt paper distributed last week. Textbook days will change slightly and require that the anthology is brought to class Mondays and Tuesday, while English Workshop is required on Wednesdays, Vocabulary Workshop on Thursday, and the assigned novel, Catcher in the Rye on Fridays. Students submitted five talking points for Chapters One-Five of the novel and will participate in a class discussion on Friday. Vocabulary Workshop Unit II answers are due on Thursday with a test date to be announced in class. Reader/Writer notebooks and "Say-Mean-Matter" comprehension strategies will be used with the Truth speech as well as speeches to be assigned from Clinton and Chavez. Students must return the letter to parents and the reading level signed documents. Cornell Notes now have been scored as has Homework One and all graded assignments will be returned; test on Cornell Notes to be announced. Vantage Writing Lab dates are Wednesday-Thursday for Period Five and Period One will receive its orientation on Wednesday--these students will be unable to use the lab but will be required to submit work online the same as Period Five students. Check teacher pages frequently as assignments are added and updated during the week.

Julius Caesar Essay

Here are instructions for completing the Caesar essay due Monday January 12:

Double space typed essay
No "you" and no contractions in formal prose
Cite specific text references to support opinions/statements/assertions
Six paragraphs minimum
Paper standards and formatting rules must be followed
Address the prompt! (if necessary, read the prompt several times and highlight exactly what is being asked)
