Winter Break Assignments--Due January 13, 2014

Complete the following and submit on Monday, January 13, 2014:

I. The Life of William Shakespeare is very interesting. (1564-1616) (shakespeareinamericancommunities.org) (this web address would NOT be included in the outline)
A.   Shakespeare was not destined for greatness and yet he is the most performed and read playwright in the world; he was not born into a noble family.
1.     He did not marry into wealth.
2.     His talent as an actor was modest.
3.     His success depended on royal patronage.
4.     His plays are still read and performed today.
a.     Many of his plays are taught in schools.
b.     Students find his writing interesting because the stories are told well.
B.    Shakespeare was born to a glove maker and tradesmen and to a daughter of a farmer; his birth was recorded as April 26 but is actually April 23.
1.     His father was good in crafting leather for skilled workers.
2.     His mother complimented the family by knowing farming skills.
3.     Elizabethan babies were baptized three days after their birth so the actual birth is three days before the baptism.
II.  The Elizabethan Age is very historical.
            A.  Elizabeth I ascends to throne in 1558.
                        1.  She had a forty-five year reign.
                        2.  London was a major power in Europe.
                                    a.  Culture and commerce were important for city development.
                                    b.  Learning and literature thrived in London.
            B.  Queen Elizabeth I’s reign is significant to England’s subjects.
                        1.  She made concessions to Catholic sympathizers.
                        2.  In 1588 the Spanish Armada was defeated.
                        3.  She funded Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe and Raleigh’s
                             exploration of the New World.
III. Elizabethan Theater is representative of the entertainment in Shakespeare’s time.
