Winter Recess December 17, 2010-January 9, 2011
Assignment One:
Complete both Comprehensive Test A and B on your own paper and submit answers in class on January 10. Return the masters on that day also. Answer two of the essay portion questions in a sentence or two.
Assignment Two:
Outline four sections of shakespeareinamericancommunities.org following proper outlining format; there is no A. without B. and there is no 1. without a 2.; do not mix phrases and sentences.
Assignment Three: Type the final essay for Catcher in the Rye following the page requirements and standard essay format; deliver the typed essay on January 10.
The Catcher In The Rye Essay
Choose ONE of the following writing prompts for J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye and read it several times. Underline or highlight specifically what the prompt requires and then determine what you will write in a well-developed, multi-paragraph essay of at least two and one-half typed pages.
Your essay must include specific quotes from the text to support your ideas.
Follow the standard rules of paragraph form, sentence structure, grammar and usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
Choose ONE:
1. Discuss Holden Caulfield's relationship with his sister Phoebe. How does she view him? What is Holden's perception of her? How do those views contribute to our understanding of Holden as the main character in The Catcher In The Rye?
2. Discuss how Holden Caulfield changes during the course of the novel. What does he learn about himself? What does he learn about the people with whom he comes in contact? Does he indeed "come of age" and grow to understand himself because of the many people and experiences he encounters?
3. Choose one of the following and explain its symbolic significance in the novel. A symbol is something, often an object, that stands for something besides itself.
a. Allie's baseball glove
b. Holden's red hunting cap
c. The carrousel in Central Park
