DEBATE PREPARATION discussion ideas from student groups:

MLK Resiliency Unit “Letter from Birmingham Jail”
“A Call for Unity” Clergymen Newspaper Article

Propositions and Narratives from Honors Grade Ten
May 26, 2016  DEBATE PREPARATION

Martin Luther King should not have interfered with the social problems of Alabama; he should have let local officials handle their own social affairs.  For a state or a city to remain stable and calm, it is necessary for its activities to remain neutral in outside problems and situations.

Decision if racial segregation is a better suited consent that should be fought in the streets on in a court.  What setting is better suited based on the circumstances.  How does each affect both?

Violent protest is necessary when basic human rights are being infringed upon.

It is more effective to protest on the streets than arguing in a court where it might be unfair and biased.

MLK’s actions in Birmingham were justified by the fact that his own people who he felt affiliated with were being mistreated and he wanted to help their voice being heard.

MLK’s death was more beneficial to the Civil Rights Movement because it united the Black community together for change.  Non-violent peace protests led by MLK were more effective than what the ministers suggested to do in court.
